At Deloitte Consulting in Canada, we call this our #Everyday magic.

Like every other organization, March 2020 changed not only the game, but also the rules of engagement — and we found ourselves scratching our heads. Every norm, routine and habit was disrupted. We went from white boards, in-person collaboration sessions, and joy to sitting behind screens for what seemed like endless hours, days, and weeks.

We found ourselves asking simple but significant questions: how do you apprentice when debriefs aren’t natural? How do you spark collaboration without serendipitous collisions? How do you celebrate success through a screen? How do you recharge when work is home, and home is work? How do you onboard thousands of colleagues without feeling the buzz of an office? And how do you get those colleagues to then onboard new colleagues while maintaining a vibrant culture?

Always up for the most complex challenge — we committed to hacking the problem by synthesizing feedback, prioritizing, and getting full court leadership support to TRULY do things differently — from the great resignation to the great attraction, and ultimately our great reset! WE are reinventing our #Everyday in our next normal.

Why did we focus on the #Everyday? Instinctively, we think it’s the big grand gestures in work and life that make a measurable shift; however, our people reminded us that it is truly the little things every-single-day that make or break how we experience work and life — and life at work. One-time events bring excitement, but it’s the #Everyday that touches our people’s lives and makes our culture what it is:

  1. First, we went back to basics — stemming from our Purpose and shared values — focusing on behaviours. We put pen to paper to spell out who we are, how we treat each other, and how we run our business in our next normal — calling them our #EverydayBehaviours. We documented our beta thinking around our 6 commitments and 17 behaviours that are distinctly Deloitte Consulting. They explain our essence, show what we value, and celebrate what is important. We used these with our people to reset. We told stories to bring them to life; when we were at our best, and when things didn’t go as planned. Through videos, internal social media, and team meetings. Next, they were embedded in our fabric: career development programs, leadership discussions, feedback mechanisms, goal setting and performance discussions.
  2. We then sensed and pulsed our workforce for what they needed next — what were they missing, what did they want more or less of, how did we make work better for our humans — and our humans better at work? Recognition and gratitude were top of the list. Rather than focus on the toolset — we focused on the outcome: #EverydayGratitude. Making recognition mainstream, distinctly human, and UBER personalized to amplify our only@Deloitte magic and learn more about our people. How? In addition to experiences of time and project rewards — we added a new category for truly exceptional performance with a bit of a market-disrupting clincher (….more to follow later 😊). Our people called it game changing, never seen in market before… exactly what we were after. How are we embedding this? A gratitude wall to share stories and celebrate each other — thanking them for their impact and recognizing their successes.
  3. Looking forward, #EverydaySolutioning is part of who we are. We will continue to support our people and partners to unearth things that no longer feel right in line with our #EverydayBehaviours. Top of mind this month: amplifying bold moves around diversity, equity and inclusion, truly transforming how we de-stress the partner making process, and incorporating greater choice into how we staff. With #EverydayBehaviours at our core, we are clear on who we are and how we run our 5000+ strong humans of Consulting — and how we will make an impact that matters #Everyday.

This is our ongoing commitment (and we have 6 of them!) to do our best to be better #Everyday — for our people, our clients, and our communities. We are reimaging the Deloitte experience to create a new and improved kind of magic. The building blocks are the same, but it is more purposeful, fluid, and human — reflecting who we want to be in this world we’re operating in now and into the future.
